My Girlfriend Priyanka cried throughout Jail: Neil Nitin MukeshMy Girlfriend Priyanka cried throughout Jail: Neil Nitin Mukesh

Neil Nitin Mukesh’s love interest is no longer kept out of view. That the girl in question Priyanka Bhatia is very much part of the Mukesh parivar became evident on the night of November 2 when at the Fame Adlabs at a private screening of Jail, Priyanka was prominently present alongside Neil’s parents and brother Naman.

Neil mother and girlfriend sobbed uncontrollably throughout.

“Priyanka and my mom were hysterical with grief. They weren’t looking at just a character being put through a traumatic time. To them it was someone who they both love in pain in front of their eyes, ” said Neil.

Neil admits Priyanka is an integral part of his family. “My parents and her parents don’t only know and like one another we also visit one another’s homes constantly.

More than lovers we’re friends first. There’s a comfort level in our interaction that makes us very relaxed with one another. We don’t have to hide anything. We meet openly and are very proud of one another.

There’s no pressure for marriage on either side. When it happens, it happens. The marital status on the passport would hardly alter anything between us.”

Priyanka has done a course in fashion designing. Neil is open to the idea of Priyanka designing his clothes for his films. “I’d love that. But it should happen on its own. Neither Priyanka nor I want to pressurize anyone to use her skills. But if it happens I’d be very happy to be dressed up by her.”Another happy happening is the fact that Neil’s colleague Ranbir Kapoor’s film Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani releases on the same day as Neil’s Jail.

Says Neil, “Ranbir and I are of course competitors. But there’s no negative rivalry between us. Our respective fathers would kill us if we behaved like two brats fighting for the same roles. I’m proud that Ranbir’s and my grandfather were very close friends. My father and Ranbir’s father adore each other. Ranbir is like my younger brother.”

So is Neil saying Ranbir is no competition?

“Of course he is!” rejoins Neil. “I’d want Ranbir’s film to do as well as mine. Fortunately Jail and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani look like the North and South pole.”

On Tuesday night all of Neil’s forthcoming directors saw Jail at Yashraj Studios “David Dhawan. Abbas-Mustan, Kunal Kohli and Ken Ghosh saw the film. I think they liked what they saw. So I’m safe in their films.”LINK....

Hair-pulling woman footballer suspended

NEW YORK: Once the darlings of American sport for their global success, women's football players are now internet video hits thanks to a hair-pulling harridan and a set of US teen girls gone wild.

Highlights making the rounds on US television and with on-line video viewers now feature University of New Mexico defender Elizabeth Lambert pulling down an opponent by her ponytail and a late-game brawl between high school girls.

Lambert was handed an indefinite suspension for her actions on Thursday in a 1-0 Mountain West Conference playoff semi-final loss to Brigham Young University, which including hitting, kicking and punching rivals.

Lambert apologized for her actions, still under review by conference officials for possible further action, but the video of her punch-and-pull performance has proven popular viewing.

In the wake of the incident came a Sunday brawl in Rhode Island involving a fight between Woonsocket and Tolman girls football teams.

Woonsocket led 5-0 in the final seconds when two players ran into each other, touching off a fight between players who punched and pulled hair and inspired post-game fights in the stands.

Only a decade ago, the host US national team defeated China in the Women's World Cup final. A second US women's pro league, Women's Professional Soccer, debuted this year with top talent from around the world.

Zardari allegedly made big money in sub-marine sale

Updated at: 1820 PST, Wednesday, November 11, 2009
PARIS: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari is suspected of having received millions of dollars in kickbacks from the 1994 sale of three French submarines to the Pakistani Navy, a French daily reported.

In addition, investigators believe that the non-payment of the full amount of the agreed kickbacks may have led to the deaths of 11 French nationals in a 2002 terror attack in the city of Karachi.

The report says the French daily acquired documents that allegedly show that Zardari received 4.3 million dollars in kickbacks from the sale of three Agosta 90 submarines for 825 million euros (currently 1.237 billion dollars).

The documents were sent to the Pakistani National Accountability Bureau (NAB) by British authorities in April 2001 and indicate that Zardari received several large payments into his Swiss bank accounts from a Lebanese businessman, Abdulrahman el-Assir, in 1994 and 1995.

According to a former executive of the French naval defence company DCN, French authorities chose el-Assir to act as intermediary in the deal. He allegedly deposited a total of 1.3 million dollars in Zardari’s bank accounts between August 15 and 30, 1994, one month before the submarine contract was signed, and then 1.2 million dollars and 1.8 million dollars one year later.

According to DCN employees who testified in the terror attack investigation, the kickbacks to Pakistan in the deal totalled 10 per cent of the purchase amount, with 6 per cent, or 49.5 million dollars, going to the military and 4 per cent, or 33 million euros, being funneled to political circles.LINK...

Sticks and carrots at the ready for US senate health care passage

Analysts say that the most important thing for the Democrats is to just get this bill through the senate. Liberals beware. Photo: AP

"Some people you can persuade by talking to them about legislative substance, some you have to persuade by talking to them about their political futures and careers," said Bruce Oppenheimer, a political science professor at Tennessee's Vanderbilt University.

"Some of them you cajole, some of them want just to be stroked a lot. Some of them you have to threaten and part of persuasion is knowing what works with who ... and some people you probably know not to waste your efforts on," he said.On Saturday, a health care bill passed by a narrow 220-215 vote in the House of Representatives, where Speaker Nancy Pelosi commands a substantial Democratic majority, but only after she accepted a series of compromises.

The environment is less favorable in the Senate, where Senator Harry Reid heads a fractious caucus with a slimmer majority and will need all his political skills to build a coalition.

The leadership will have to use "appeals to loyalty and necessity", said Steven Smith, a political science professor and expert on congressional politics at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri.

Reid will need to bring together both fiscally conservative and liberal Democrats, and also may woo them with offers of either legislative compromises or perks for their states, Oppenheimer said.

"It may be that a senator who is sitting on the fence will look for what they can get in return."

To secure the bill's passage, Reid is also likely to court moderate Republicans including Maine's senator, Olympia Snowe, by offering them concessions, even at the risk of angering liberal Democrats.

"At some point the liberal side will start saying you're giving up too much, but I think that most of them strategically know that the important thing right now is to get a bill out of the Senate," Oppenheimer said.

Moderate Democrats will require more convincing than their liberal counterparts, particularly in the wake of Democratic defeats last week in gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey, analysts said.

The election results will "absolutely" make moderates think twice about voting for health care reform, said Thomas Goldwasser, adjunct professor of political management at George Washington University, in Washington.

"Any moderate in the Senate is going to be frightened if they come from a state that didn't lean heavily towards a Democratic president."

But Oppenheimer said the Democratic leadership may warn senators that facing voters without successful reform would be even more of an electoral risk.

"Democrats do not want to have to run for re-election in 2010 having a bill that has failed. I think there's a real stake in getting something passed and in the end I think the administration's going to take advantage of that," he said.

As Reid works behind the scenes, President Barack Obama and White House officials have a public role to play in pushing the debate forward, Smith said.

"They need to continue to champion the programme with the public, they need to keep down opposition, they need to keep people interested in the programme.

"There's no one who can substitute for the president in pressing the cause," he said.

Howard Dean, former governor of Vermont and a leading liberal health care advocate, said Obama should hold Congress to his year-end deadline for completed legislation.

"I think the president has to sign the bill by the end of the year," said Dean. "It gets so political once you enter into an election year. After the new year, once people come back, all they're going to be thinking about is elections."

When legislation arrives on Obama's desk, it is likely to be watered down by compromises, despite warnings from Dean that the liberal wing of the Democratic party is "hanging by a thread because of ... compromises" in the House.

"They're going to have to settle for anything as non-controversial as they can. I think they know they have no margin of error," Goldwasser said.

Ultimately, moving the process forward will trump pleasing the party's liberals, according to Oppenheimer.

"Your big effort in the short term is to get something out of the Senate and therefore you're willing to trade off on specific provisions as long as you can get a bill through."LINK....
